A basket resides under that clear lid on your pump.
Under the clear lid of every pool pump, regardless of brand, there is a basket. Most are plastic, a few are stainless steel, and this time of year they are all full of leaves. This basket is the last line of defense for your pump’s impeller. The impeller is a small disc attached to the shaft of the motor. It spins when your pump is on and circulates the water through the pump and to the filter. If it were not for the pump basket, the impeller would become clogged with debris and soon, your pump would not move any water at all.
Where does the debris come from?
Most pools have a drain in the floor of the pool as well as at least one skimmer at the water’s surface. Leaves and other small debris will make its way down the drain at times. A full skimmer basket could break and send leaves down the pipe in the skimmer. Other times you may let leaves go through the skimmer while emptying the basket. Some of you may vacuum the pool through the skimmer and allow the debris to collect in the pump. The fact is, there are many ways that the debris gets to the pump, now you have to empty it.
